Emporia Slovaks learn how to make sausages.

Roman Adamka, with the Slovak Republic
Air Force and stationed at Nato
in Norfolk Nato, taught an enthusiastic group in Emporia how to make
Slovak sausages -- just in time for the holidays. Many families,
descended from Slovak immigrants who came to Virginia in the early 1900's enjoyed
authentic sausages, made with the same methods their ancestors used

Volunteer
Painters gathered at the Clerk's Office located
at the 1883 Courthouse Complex in Prince
George County,
which has been designated for the Czech/Slovak Exhibit at the Prince George County Historical
Society Regional
Museum. Since this past
spring one of our Czech descendents has volunteered to act as project
manager to help get the Clerk’s Office ready for use. Tremendous progress
has been made -- there have been a couple of lucky breaks in terms of the good
condition of the structure itself and the ability to secure volunteers from Ft.
Lee’s Warrant Officer’s training class (as their community involvement
project). More painting opportunities will be announced for 2008, with
the goal of getting the Clerk's Office ready for the Czech/Slovak
Exhibit. Click here

Descendents of Slovak immigrants
who settled Virginia farms in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s were guests at
National Slovak Day at the North American Treaty Organization (NATO)
headquarters in Norfolk, VA on September 4, 2007. The Virginians joined
NATO headquarters’ staff and their families in a flag raising ceremony honoring
the Slovak Republic and a reception attended by
Supreme Allied Commander Transformation U.S. Air Force Gen. Lance L. Smith and
Minister of Defense of the Slovak Republic His Excellency Mr. Frantisek Kasicky.
At the
reception, the Southside Virginia Czech/Slovak Heritage Society exhibited
Slovak kroje (native folk dress) and other artifacts
illustrating the Slovak culture that can still be found in Virginia. The descendents, who
represented Slovak families who settled in the counties of Charles City,
Chesterfield, Greensville, Henrico, and Prince George, were the invited guests
of Roman Adamka, Administrator to the National
Liaison Representative of the Slovak Republic, who stated in a message to the
group, “I really appreciate all your support and willingness to come from all
across the region for every event you participated in. It is an honor to
have such wonderful people around, who are truly keeping the traditions of
their ancestors. And best of all is that I can see the true Slavic
heritage you are, so vividly, keeping alive.

Four representatives from Southside Virginia Czech/Slovak Heritage
Society met in Norfolk
to re-connect with the Slovak and Czech Republic Nato representatives. As last year, there were
plenty of marching bands, floats, give-aways, food, amd fun. For us, however, the best part was
re-connecting with Roman Adamek, the Slovak Nato liaison, and meeting Marek Popelar, the
Czech Nato liaison. They showered us with
courtesy and attention, and we left enthused with the possibilities of
on-going contacts with these fine representatives of our ancestors'
homelands.
