The original Ittle Dew holds a special place in my family’s heart. Not only did my love of Nintendo’s Zelda series draw me to the title, my grandmother also enjoyed it. Needless to say, Ittle Dew 2 had big shoes to fill.

Ittle Dew 2 starts where its predecessor ends, with the hero Ittle and her fox floating on a raft. Wasting no time, they crash into an island and set off on their adventure. The scope of the game is on point – rather than spending hours on tutorials and exposition, this title immediately sends you on your way to adventure. Subtle hints and a map with a marker lead you to where you need to go, but the world is completely open to explore. Armed with a stick, a buddy fox, and a map, it is up to the player to find where to go next. Ittle Dew 2’s creativity shines here with its first dungeon being a literal “pillow” fort. Though this may imply that this area is soft and easy, this dungeon doesn’t disappoint, and eases the player in with simple puzzles.

After a couple of dungeons, I did a little sidetracking and found a puzzle maze. Another aspect where Ittle Dew 2 excels is in its optional puzzles and dungeons. Hidden caves literally cover the map, each filled with secret items and life containers in the form of crayons. Each pack of crayons adds a quarter of health, increasing your total stamina. Items are also available that increase the damage output of your weapons.

Although my playthrough of Ittle Dew 2 lasted around eight hours, I felt like I just scratched the surface. Even after writing this review, there were still secrets that needed to be uncovered. Hidden maps and secret caves offered upgrades to different items not necessarily required to complete the game.

Tools in Ittle’s arsenal also tap into this title’s creative spirit. A sword extender chain (which extends into a larger sword), an ice block creator, a push rod that moves objects (and dishes out damage), and a stick of dynamite are just a few that stand out. What set these items apart was that they could be used together to solve puzzles, something I felt that was very gratifying.

While exploring, I found my way to the entrance of a dungeon not marked on my map. The traditional “fire” dungeon is even noted by your fox as a token fire dungeon in this type of game. This dungeon was a noticeable (but welcome) spike in difficulty. Here I found my first enemy that wasn’t outright killable, as well as obstacles that required more than simple strategic movement. In Ittle Dew 2, the controls almost directly resemble the top-down Zelda games, albeit with a new roll ability. The roll is essential in making it past spikes and enemy attacks, and becomes a critical part of the game.

Since the world is open for Ittle to explore, the player is made aware early on that all dungeons can be completed with just the items you enter with. Put simply, if you can enter it, you can beat it. While this helps replayability tremendously, my initial playthrough was met with a good amount of difficulty in the later stages of the game. Whether I was underpowered or not is unknown to me, as I did not complete every side dungeon and don’t know if armor or potions are available.

Shortcuts are available in dungeons but certain items (obtained by completing dungeons out of order) are required to utilize these shortcuts. I’m impressed at the level of polish that went into the playability and puzzles in this game, as both the puzzles and the items have an incredible amount of depth.

My complaints for Ittle Dew 2 are few: a few dungeon bosses are reused (albeit with different weapons), and late game balancing seemed rough. I can’t verify that a playthrough would be easier for anyone else, but the difficulty spike is unreal in the final dungeon. Nowhere within the game did I find the ability to replenish health via a potion, nor armor that allowed me to take less damage. Certain enemies within this dungeon were so hard that difficult that it almost felt like luck was needed to beat them.

Ittle Dew 2 feels like a focused and expert approach to making a Zelda game. What Ludosity was able to accomplish here felt like the developers had a level of understanding of the gameplay on par or even better than some of Nintendo’s offerings. Fluid gameplay, challenging dungeon crawling, incredible replayability, and satisfying progression make the experience a very satisfying one. Fans of the genre – and even my grandmother – would get a kick out of Ittle and her adventures.

News from Developer THQ Nordic today, reports that the upcoming Darksiders Warmastered Edition will support PS4 Pro. Announced as the companies “pioneer” PS4 game, 4k images and a teaser trailer accompanied the news.

The full list of features follows:

Darksiders follows the path of the first Horseman of the Apocalypse, War. Having been deceived by evil into bringing about the end of the world, he stands accused of inciting a war between Heaven and Hell. Ultimately it is up to War to take on the forces of Hell head on, while being hunted by the Angels of Heaven.

First off we have a rumor from the much respected Lara Dale over at LetsPlayVideoGames. The report details a rumored release price for two different SKUs (stock keeping unit) of the Nintendo Switch priced at £199.99 and £249.99.

Additionally Switch Pro Controllers will be priced at £39.99. No USD prices were rumored but basic conversion puts the prices at around $249 and $299 respectively.

In the rumor from UK retailer GAME, the two SKUs were described as a “basic SKU” and a “SKU featuring more internal storage and a packed in game.” For comparison the PS4 is priced at £249.99 or $299 while the Xbox One is £213.85 and $253.99 via Amazom this holiday.

Nintendo Switch is the latest planned release from big N, featuring a handheld video gamepad, playable both on the go or in a dock at home with a gamepad. An announcement video debuted back in October with multiple games played including Skyrim, Zelda, Mario, Splatoon and a NBA game.

Of course we wont know any more Switch news until Nintendo has their announced event in Tokyo this upcoming January 12. Until then we will just have to watch this video and speculate.

Another bit of speculation rumored this week comes from another reliable reporter. Coming from arcadegirl64, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will no longer be released alongside the Nintendo Switch this March.

Instead “four-to-six months of testing” will be needed once localization is completed. This would put a new time-frame for release about year from now or next fall.

To put it in perspective, The Legend of Zelda is reportedly the biggest game Nintendo has ever created. Extrapolating math from the E3 reveal which revealed the map size to be larger than 300 sq miles.

For comparison that is over 12 times the size of Twilight Princess or over nine times the size of Skyrim. Nintendo has been keen to make sure that their upcoming Zelda title will be perfect and have delayed it as such multiple times.

Originally announced in 2013, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will release on Wii U and Nintendo Switch sometime next year. For now you can expect me to cover every single thread of rumor, from here to release. For now, check out these gifs I made.

At Idea Factory’s 3rd annual press event, we learned more about their upcoming titles for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Steam. See what they have in store for 2017.

Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force will make its way to Steam in North America, Europe, and Japan as Idea Factory’s first simultaneous worldwide Steam release in early 2017. Following the fierce battle between a Vile God and the weapons of the Goddess, Fairy Fencer F takes place in a land filled with weapons known as Furies. The protagonist Fang gets himself caught up in this battle when he pulls a sword from a stone, and is forced to become an important part of this war.

You can expect Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force to come complete with Japanese and English voices to complement its Japanese and English subtitles. A Steam-exclusive deluxe pack will also be available, come this spring.

The upcoming dungeon crawler Mary Skelter: Nightmares will feature a turn-based battle system to complement its RPG mechanics. Using blood transformations, players will set traps to take on insatiable monsters, all while solving the dungeons’ mysteries. Expect a twist in the dungeon-crawling RPG genre, as the game has monsters chasing you the whole time. Assigning different classes, unlocking new skills, and setting traps is the only way to survive.

You can expect Mary Skelter: Nightmares on PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV in the summer of 2017.

The evening kicked off with the biggest announcement of the night: Dark Rose Valkyrie. A brand new action RPG coming from director Kenta Sugano, Dark Rose Valkyrie features a unique real-time combat system that will keep you on your toes. Using riot combos and customizable attacks, players will eradicate the threat of Chimera in a closed-off rendition of Japan. Additionally, characters change form and strength when the sun sets, allowing for more strategic combat.

Arkane Studios and Bethesda have released the official launch trailer for Dishonored 2. Celebrating tomorrow’s early access, they’ve also shed a little light on the upcoming game via the trailer and news today.

In Dishonored 2 you can play as either Emily Kaldwin or Corvo Attano, tasked with taking back Dunwall. Delilah has taken the throne and its up to you to get it back. The keys to restoring Emily to power are hidden in the once-dazzling coastal city of Karnaca, where Dishonored 2 takes place. Using the mark of the Outsider and supernatural abilities, its up to you to forever alter the fate of the Empire.

Digital Pre-orders will be able to play the game a day early as well as receive the Definitive Edition of Dishonored for free. Get ready to get back to the world of Dishonored 2 on Friday, November 11 on Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC.

After months of speculation, Rockstar has released the sweetest bike to ever grace GTA Online. The new Tron Bike lights up the night and is available in the new Deadline Adversary Mode for purchase at Legendary Motorsport. Make sure and don’t go looking for a “Tron” bike as obviously Rockstar doesn’t have the rights to Disney content. Instead pickup the “Nagasaki Shotaro” for 2.25 million along with a Deadline Outfit, unlocked at a clothing store.

The new Deadline Adersary Mode pits four players against each other on Shotaro bikes. Just like Tron, any victim unfortunate to run into your light trail becomes instant roadkill. Strategic Power-ups give an edge and boosts help speed up to cut off your opponents. Double GTA $ and RP is awarded to those that play this new mode now through November 21st. Bioware finally lifted the covers off their upcoming Mass Effect Andromeda in an Official Cinematic Reveal Trailer today to celebrate N7 Day. Check it out below.

The news was dropped today via both YouTube and twitter. According to the text below the YouTube video “The journey to Andromeda begins now. Navigate the uncharted reaches of the Andromeda Galaxy to unravel its mysteries, discover vivid alien worlds, and lead the charge to find a new home among the stars. How far will you go to become humanity’s hero?”

In addition to the reveal trailer Amazon has listed the game for Preorder. Amazon also listed 3 new Collectible Nomad all terrain vehicles which will be sold alongside the game. PDP Collector’s Edition Remote Control Nomad ND1, PDP Collector’s Edition Diecast Nomad ND1, and PDP Mini Diecast Nomad ND1 will be sold for $199, $99 and $9.99.

Continuing the misadventures of series veteran Clementine, The Walking Dead: A New Frontier is set to come out in the coming weeks. Will Clementine finally meet her end?

Not much is known about the upcoming game, but we do know that it will continue the story of Clementine. If it’s anything like the first two games, expect plenty of drama, heartbreak and characters just trying to survive “the walking dead.”

A New Frontier takes place four years after the events of season one, and adds new protagonist Javier. According to Executive Producer Kevin Boyle, “Javier will begin to unravel the mystery of who Clementine has become, as her story intersects with his – both of them still driven by the things they value most, long after society’s collapse.” Whether that means he is a friend or is forced to be one with Clementine is not known at this time.

No concrete details have been released, but we don’t have long to wait. Set to come out in November for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, and mobile, what better way to vent your election frustrations than with some zombie stomping? Seriously, I think Clementine would make a better president than either candidate.

Described as a love letter to the pixelated platformers of old, Owlboy instantly grabbed my attention. Whether it be taking on flying as a platforming mechanic, utilizing the speed and precision of 2D shooters, or just simple puzzle solving, it’s clear the attention to detail present is second to none.

Owlboy starts out simple enough with an introduction to its game mechanics and our titular hero Otus. Our protagonist is portrayed as a clumsy mute with promise, but also inept at the higher teachings of greater owls. Simple controls allow Otus to fly, roll, jump, spin attack, and mid-air dash around the screen. Everything is smooth and crisp when using an Xbox One controller on PC. After some brief exploration and some conversations that push the story forward, Otus makes his first friend in the town’s defense mechanic, Geddy. Geddy serves as the first actual weapon in the game, shooting his blaster while being carried during flight. The blaster is very effective on the outset, utilizing 360 degree targeting via the right analog control stick or mouse. Additionally, Geddy’s blaster is utilized to destroy barriers and allow progression through the first area temple.

I want to stop right here and, before going further, would point out the pixel art in this game, which is practically unrivaled in the industry today. Though I have played through hundreds of video games spanning decades of consoles, I feel that Owlboy is the best looking 2D pixel game ever created. Titles like Ori and the Blind Forest and Axiom Verge pushed the boundaries of what could be done without console limitations, and Owlboy continues this trend. Character models breathe, grass blows in the wind, and even candles flicker against the walls. Each area has no less than four distinct layers. It truly is astounding how much attention to detail has been put into this game. Over the eight or so hours that encompass this truly incredible experience, I never once felt like any part of this game wasn’t alive.

Progressing further into Owlboy, our protagonist Otus finds himself periodically stunted from proceeding. When this happens, a new shooter character is implemented as both a companion and a source of commentary. Following the beam blaster character Geddy, Alphonse and his leaf-burning shotgun is also available. This shotgun is utilized to traverse obstacles and deal with larger enemies. Finally, the stickbug Twig rounds out the trio of companions available to Otus. Twig acts as a web slinger, shooting his web at various hinges and slinging Otus across the screen. Switching weapons can be done with the press of a button, allowing for various battle scenarios. Further bosses utilize this strategy by requiring the player to switch back and forth between guns to do proper damage. Though it made sense in my playthrough, first time fights with different enemies may require a little bit of practice.

Owlboy tells the story of a quiet but goodhearted protagonist that wants to help the world he is part of. Otus, a kindhearted and truly gentle character, is intent on helping his friends. In doing so, the experience goes to floating sky cities, space pirate ships, lava caverns, snowy mountains, radioactive plants, and even outer space. The progression throughout the game is well-balanced, and it’s hard to not just want to get lost in its world. Various areas also expand slightly with hidden pathways leading to hidden treasures and collectibles. The only real drawback that occurred during my playthrough was in the technical window settings. When shifting between full screen and windowed mode, the sound sometimes dropped out. However, a menu that restores the audio is present. Additionally, the soundtrack throughout the game gave way to wonder and joy at times while also conveying desperation and suspense for a world that wants to exist. Each area is truly alive, and that is represented in all aspects throughout the game.

Games created with this level of attention to detail are hard to find. Throughout the past decade we can each pinpoint various favorite titles that truly touched our hearts and minds, but Owlboy stands at the top or near it. This is the kind of game that transcends time as its art, gameplay, story and music truly should be heralded as a shining example for developers to aspire towards. Whether this is something that can be duplicated remains to be seen as this title is a true labor of love and passion. Every frame in the shows the deep level of love that is only possible by withholding a game until perfection. I’ve only played a handful of games that could be considered perfect in my time and this stands among them. Congratulations go to the developers for creating a masterpiece.

Heroes of the Storm got 2 big new trailers, including the announcement of 2 new characters. Varian Wrynn and Legion were announced alongside a new brawl map: Blackheart’s Revenge. The Characters are scheduled for release mid-November while the map sometime in December. Heroes of the Storm is an online team brawler with favourite Blizzard characters. Hearthstone is also receiving an expansion with pre-orders available today. Releasing in early December, Mean Streets of Gadgetzan seeks to introduce three crime families whose side you can choose to control the city. More details are promised in the weeks to come but for now it seems the 3 affiliations include Grimy Goons, Kabal and Jade Lotus.

Starcraft 2, surprisingly, wasn’t left out either with the Co-op Commander Alexie Stukov announcement trailer. The former Terran Vice-Admiral and current-infested leader will be joining the ranks in StarCraft II to lead forces and infest units and structures using unorthodox means. Even though the trilogy of StarCraft II officially finished, Blizzard has been releasing mini campaigns titled Nova Covert Ops. Confirmation of the conclusion is set to be delivered November 22.

Overwatch got a ton of new info today, so let’s get started. First off the announcement of Sombra was released with a new character trailer. Sombra is a powerful infiltrator with hacking and EMP skills. The hacks she employs can disrupt her enemies, making them easier to take out, while the EMP gives her the upper hand against multiple foes at once. Additionally, she has a Translocate and camouflage that increases her stealth and makes it hard to target her. Blizzard seriously knows how to make cinematics and they continue their streak with her character announcement trailer below.

In what may have been the biggest announcement from this year’s Blizzcon, Blizzard announced the creation of the Overwatch League. Aiming to create a league where players will be regional, the idea behind this is quite complex and exciting. Basically, Blizzard intends on holding their very own leaderboard tryouts starting very soon to see who would be qualified to even compete. These “Professional” players will then be signed to a team where they will even receive a salary! A season will then be played out for the world to see, culminating in a Playoff. Celebrating the 20th Anniversary, Blizzard announced today that the original Diablo will be playable in Diablo 3 starting next week. “The Darkening of Tristram” will debut in a public test realm and will allow those that own the Reaper of Souls DLC to play the entire Diablo campaign using the Diablo 3 engine. The game comes complete with 8 direction character movement, and a retro graphics filter. The “Anniversary Patch” celebrating 20 years of Diablo will also bring with it new areas “Shrouded Moors” and “Temple of the Firstborn” to adventure mode.

The reveal of Diablo IV was nothing but rumors after all. Instead “Rise of the Necromancer” was announced as a pack that will go on sale in 2017. The pack will include the Diablo 2 favorite Necromancer as a playable class along with additional stash slots, character slots and cosmetic goodies. What was missing from the conference announcement was anything resembling hope for its perennial MMORPG, World of Warcraft. According to Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime, “We’re committed to releasing more content on an ongoing basis than ever before.” Like we’ve never heard that before. For now, all we got was this little guy, a charity pet for this year’s Make-A-Wish Foundation. This is important and I hope plenty of people support it but not really anything worth of note content-wise.
