Disgaea D2 Preview: Dood Harder
I’m a sucker for strategy RPGs. The leveling, the depth, the diverse cast and crew of characters…it’s just a shame that they are a dying breed in the ol’ US of A. However, NIS’ Disgaea series has long been a bastion for SRPG aficionados, providing enough playtime to get through the toughest of droughts. With Disgaea D2 on the horizon, it looks like there is yet another oasis for fans in sight.
Due out later this year, Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness is a direct sequel to the original Disgaea game story-wise, despite being the fifth or so entry in the 10-year-old series (just go with it). Those worried that they might be lost in the story need not worry: despite being a sequel to a sequel, the narrative is separate from the main series and can be enjoyed on its own.
Much like previous entries, Disgaea D2 looks to have another over-the-top story planned. Series stalwarts like the narcissistic Laharl and the Fallen Angel Flonne are set to make a return, along with a bunch of Prinnies for good measure.
Of course, Disgaea D2 will also pack a bunch of new mechanics that will add more depth to the series. Things like the stat-inheriting Master/Pupil system and status-altering Geo Panels may seem extraneous to those not versed in the ways of the Netherworld, but those who have spent hours grinding their characters to perfection will appreciate the new features and fine-tuned customization.
Be sure to stay tuned for Gamers Heroes’ final verdict when Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness hits the PS3 on October 8 in North America and September 27 in Europe. Hardcore fans that purchase the game at launch can even snag themselves a snazzy two-disc OST, graphic print, and DLC costume pack.
