Two New Smash Bros Characters Announced, Another Returning

Super Smash Bros News
After hyping up the announcement of a new character for Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS, the official Smash Bros website has announced not one, but two new characters debuting. Unfortunately, this announcement (primarily the trailer) does come with a spoiler warning for anyone that hasn’t played Fire Emblem: Awakening and intends to do so.

The two new characters appearing in Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS are the Avatar (the player, default name Robin) and Lucina. The trailer below also confirms that Smash Bros veteran Captain Falcon is returning as well. The trailer also hints that Chrom will be available in some capacity, whether as an alternate costume for Lucina (their fighting styles are exactly the same) or as an Assist Trophy. One small thing of interest is that you can play as either the male or female Avatar, much like you would in the must-own 3DS game they originate from (Fire Emblem: Awakening).

With the Avatar and Lucina being confirmed and Chrom being teased, this brings the total amount of Fire Emblem characters in Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS up to at least four, the highest amount any non-Super Mario or Pokemon franchise has in one game. While The Legend of Zelda would have five total characters if Ganondorf is announced, due to Zelda and Sheik being separate fighters now, currently they’re tied at 4-4. That’s a pretty impressive feat for a franchise that was close to being cancelled only a few years ago. Remember, the Fire Emblem title before Awakening, Shin Monshō no Nazo ~Hikari to Kage no Eiyū~, was only released in Japan, despite the previous five titles being released internationally.

With the announcement of these three new characters, the current roster for Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS is at 36 and counting. Super Smash Bros for 3DS is scheduled to be released October 3, 2014 and Super Smash Bros for Wii U is scheduled some time holiday season, 2014.

The Retro Goat Reacts: Considering Fire Emblem: Awakening is one of my all time favorite games, and Fire Emblem is one of my all time favorite franchises, I’m more than a little hyped about their heavy inclusion in Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS. I had a feeling another Fire Emblem character would eventually be announced, but I did not expect this. The trailer does make Captain Falcon out to be little more than an afterthought, but his inclusion is much less suprising than Avatar and Lucina. I also like the fact that I can say, with little exaggeration, that my wife and I are in the latest Smash Bros game. Granted I’ve played through the game multiple times, and I’ve married different women, but that’s besides the point! I really don’t think I could be any more hyped about the latest Smash Bros title now, though Nintendo might be able to find another way to surprise me.
